Spreading Stories, Not Waste – One Book at a Time with Children’s Book Project
How Our Book Donations Are Making a Real Difference
In today’s digital age, physical books remain powerful tools for childhood development and imagination. Yet many UK families face barriers to book ownership, while countless quality children’s books sit unused on shelves across the nation.
The Reading Crisis in the UK: Understanding the Challenge
Recent statistics paint a concerning picture of childhood literacy in the UK:
According to the National Literacy Trust, 1 in 11 disadvantaged children in the UK don’t own a single book
7.1 million adults in England have very poor literacy skills
Children who own books are 6 times more likely to read above the expected level for their age
The UK has the lowest teenage literacy rates of 23 developed nations
Meanwhile, approximately 13 million books are sent to landfill in the UK annually – a staggering waste of resources and potential.
Our Solution: Creating a Circular Book Economy
We’re tackling this challenge head-on through our partnership with the Children’s Book Project, a remarkable organisation dedicated to redistributing quality books to children who need them most.
We’re proud to announce we’ve donated over 2,000 pre-loved books collected through our toy recycle banks to the Children’s Book Project – and this number continues to grow each month.
The Children’s Book Project: Transforming Access to Reading
The Children’s Book Project works to tackle inequality by giving books to children who have few or none of their own. Since their founding, they have:
Gifted over 1,000,000 books to children across the UK
Helped save approximately 500 tonnes of books from landfill
Worked with over 1,500 UK settings including schools, hospitals, refugee centres and women’s shelters
Improved reading outcomes for children from disadvantaged backgrounds
Environmental Impact: The Double Benefit
Our book donation programme delivers dual benefits:
Environmental sustainability: By diverting 2,000+ books from potential waste streams, we’ve saved approximately 1 tonne of paper from landfill, helping reduce methane emissions and conserve valuable resources.
Social sustainability: These same books now spark imagination, build literacy skills, and create opportunities for thousands of children who previously had limited access to reading materials.
Why This Matters: The Power of Pre-Loved Books
Each pre-loved book donated through our toy banks represents:
A resource saved from waste
A new adventure for a child who might otherwise go without
A step toward improving UK literacy rates
A connection between communities through shared stories
How We’re Making It Work: Our Collection Process
Our toy recycle banks provide an accessible way for families to donate books their children have outgrown. We carefully sort and assess each donation, ensuring only quality books reach their new owners.
Approximately 35% of all donations to our toy banks are books – demonstrating the significant need for book recycling options in communities across the UK.
The Bigger Picture: Addressing UK Literacy Challenges
With 380,000 children in the UK not owning a single book, our work with the Children’s Book Project helps address a critical national challenge. Book ownership is directly linked to:
Higher academic achievement
Improved mental wellbeing
Better employment prospects in adulthood
Enhanced social mobility
How You Can Help Expand Our Impact
The success of this initiative depends entirely on continued community support. Here’s how you can contribute:
Donate your children’s outgrown books & toys to our toy recycle banks
Spread the word about our partnership with the Children’s Book Project
Volunteer with local collection and sorting efforts
Looking Forward: Growing Our Book Donation Programme
We’re committed to expanding this vital programme, with targets to:
Increase our donations to 10,000 books by the end of the year
Extend our toy bank network to 10 new locations
Partner with additional literacy organisations across the UK
Conclusion: Every Book Counts
From environmental conservation to childhood literacy, every book donated creates ripples of positive change. We’re immensely grateful to everyone who has contributed to our toy banks and helped us reach this 2,000-book milestone.
Together, we’re not just spreading stories – we’re building a more sustainable, literate future for the UK, one book at a time.
